Gutter Guards Fern Bay

Gutter guards in Fern Bay keep wind-blown sand, salt spray and banksia litter out of your roof guttering, so heavy rain runs to the downpipe instead of over the fascia. We quote the install up front, then fit and check every run. Call (02) 4063 1093 or use the form to book the plumber in Fern Bay.

What Ends Up in Gutters on This Coast?

Three things fill a gutter on this stretch of coast:

  • Lifted on the persistent onshore wind off the Stockton Bight and dropped along every run, where it packs hard against the gutter floor
  • Banksia and paperbark litter from the coastal scrub that grows through this dune and marsh country, matting down over the outlets
  • Gnawing at galvanised trays and their fixings year after year until the gutter starts to weep rust stains down the fascia

Any one of them slows the flow. All three together mean the next heavy rain has nowhere to go but over the edge.

How We Fit Gutter Guards

  1. 01

    Inspect and quote

We look over the guttering, note rusted sections and check the fall before naming a fixed figure.

  2. 02

    Clean out first

Every run is cleared and flushed, and the downpipe outlets are checked while the gutter is empty.

  3. 03

    Fit the mesh

A marine-grade guard goes on trimmed to each run, with worn fixings replaced as we go.

  4. 04

    Water test

A hose run confirms water passes the guard and reaches the downpipe before we pack up.

What Changes the Price of a Guard Job?

What sits behind the figure:

  • The metres of guttering around the roofline, since a single-storey rectangle prices differently to a multi-wing home
  • Roof and gutter height, because a two-storey run needs more set-up than one you can reach from a step ladder
  • The state of the guttering, because rusted sections get replaced rather than covered
  • The mesh grade, since exposed dune-side roofs take a heavier weave than sheltered ones

Why Fern Bay Roofs Need the Cover

Salt reaches the metal first

With ocean surf to the east and river wetlands to the west, every roofline here catches salty onshore wind, and it wears the coating off galvanised gutters sooner than it would inland. A guard mesh here has to be chosen for salt exposure, not just leaves.

Sand and rain arrive together

Area rainfall averages 1100mm a year, and east coast lows bring it in heavy bursts. On low, flat sand the water drains away slowly, so an overflowing gutter dumps it against the wall and into the yard.

Older roofs gain the most

Guards keep the channel open to the downpipe, which counts on the 1960s to 1980s fibro and brick veneer homes and Bayway village roofs that have already weathered decades of salt.

When We're Not the Right Call

Rusted-out roof sheets or loose flashings are for a roofer, not a gutter guard. Guards also do nothing for pits and pipes under the yard; a blocked downpipe line is traced and cleared through our stormwater drains service.

Gutter Guard Questions From These Streets

Do guards stop the wind-blown dune sand as well as the leaves?

They slow it down a great deal. Fine mesh holds most drifting sand and banksia litter on top of the guard where the next heavy rain washes it off, instead of letting it settle in the gutter and set hard. We fit a mesh grade suited to exposed coastal roofs.

Can guards go on an older settlement roof as well as a new estate roof?

Yes, provided the guttering underneath is sound. Older beachside and Bayway village roofs take the same mesh as the newer estate homes, with salt-worn fixings swapped during the install. A gutter rusted through has to be replaced before a guard is worth fitting, and you hear that before any quote.

Do you clean the gutters before fitting guards here?

Always. Guards go over a clean, flushed gutter, otherwise you seal the problem in rather than out. The clean also lets us check the fall and the downpipe outlets, which is the easiest moment to catch a blockage before an east coast low tests the whole system.

Will guards stop my gutters overflowing in a big storm?

They stop overflow caused by a packed gutter. They cannot move water faster than the downpipe takes it, and they don't help pits or pipes under the yard, which our stormwater drains crew looks after.
